NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup Driver Carl Edwards visits MDFR on 9/11

(MIAMI, September 11, 2013) – Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) and the Homestead-Miami Speedway, teamed up to host a series of fire rescue activities on Wednesday, September 11, at MDFR Headquarters in Doral with NASCAR driver Carl Edwards. 

The appearance was part of NASCAR’s Chase Across America, previewing the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR’s equivalent of the playoffs, which culminates with the season-ending championship race – the Ford EcoBoost 400 – on November 17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

NASCAR driver Edwards toured the facility, and participated in fire rescue training programs such as using the Jaws of Life for car extrication and battling a simulated car fire. Edwards then traveled to Miami-Dade Fire Station 43 in the Richmond Heights area of Miami to have lunch with MDFR staff. 

“Edwards is a huge advocate of the Homestead Miami Speedway and is the type of guy that like to be in the middle of things,” said Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer. “When Edwards found out he was going to visit MDFR, he was the envy of the garage. A lot of the other drivers told him that they wish that they could be here today doing what he was doing.”

As a parting gift, Miami-Dade Fire Chief Dave Downey gave Edwards a department patch, which he says he will wear proudly on his suit during NASCAR's final sprint cup race, November in Homestead.
